HI Guys
I'm looking for some advice on a new graphics card.
My rig so far….
Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.66Ghz
6GB (3x2G DDR3 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit
2 x WD 500gb Sata Drive
600w power supply
23" lcd Monitor
windows 7 64 bit
I have built this over 6 months adding bits until I finally got the mother board I wanted and then set up every thing together, my problem is I'm currently running a single 1gb low end of graphics card and time to up grade, I was running a P4 3.0Ghz so a simple cheap card was good enough
but I'm am confused NVIDIA or ATI????
is a single card better then SLI/CROSSFIRE?
I found this card and for £100 its in my price range, XFX GeForce 9800 GTX Graphics adapter - 512 MB - GDDR3 SDRAM
but any help will be great |

Ati at the the Mo seem to be a better choice matey but it may be worth holding out until Nvidia release
there new cards but any of the new Ati cards should be more than adequate for any new game released and
would last a while as they are DX11. Sli & Crossfire for me at the Mo is a waste of money when you can get one card that works well |

ATI crossfire is better technology than SLI just by the way it works. ATI seem to have better cards atm, but they always seem to leepfrog each other when they bring out new GPUs etc.
I like to use futuremark website shows what the cards get on ratings.

With a 600 watt power supply i would recommend a single card have a look at this cheap as chips

sorry i was at work...
ok here you go
its an ASUS P6T SE, LGA1355 socket, chip set is Intel x58 3 x PCIe 2.0 x 16 (at x16 / x16 / x4 mode), 1 PCIe x1 slot
its supports ATI Quad-GPU crossfirex Tech ( what ever that is)
hope this helps |

Yummy mobo...you can go for anything but think twice if you want sli or +fire as your psu may need upgrading. Your budget talks now, personally I'm an nvidia fan but after the probs I had with my new gtx285 in sli... I'll think twice.

As ever a single high end card is perfect. SLI-XFIRE is not worth the time or effort.
Look into a lucid chipset for intel mobo on http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/motherboards/2010/01/08/msi-big-bang-fusion-lucid-hydra-arrives/1
This will shed abit more light into dual gpus.
Ati 5*** is a revamped 4*** series card but is the best you can get currently.
As I understand nvidia have skipped a gpu generaion as the last project didn't meet the expectations and went back to redesign hence the lack of new producta that way. The 'fermi' gpu by nvidia will be soon released and will be very very good but at a price.
A cheap upgrade would be looking at a ati 4870 or 4890 card (£100-120)
but that is dx10 only
ATi 5870 is a good shout you have £320 spare or wait until nvidia release the new gpu and ati may be forced to cut alot of price.
Time is the best tool as things get cheaper the longer you hold out for.

ok just had some great news from work, we get out bonus...
so my next silly question is what does a maker have to do with it all???
ASUS EAH5970/G/2DIS/2GD5/A Graphics adapter - 2 GB - GDDR5 SDRAM
£427 new - 39 stores
Sapphire RADEON HD 5970 OC Graphics adapter - 2 GB - GDDR5 SDRAM
£436 new - 31 stores
XFX Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition Graphics adapter - 2 GB - GDDR5 SDRAM
£491 new - 12 stores
does it matter who makes the card or is it worth spending the money.

To a point it does matter, but really by build quality. they are all good makes and should have good quality cards. As they all use the same chip type that nividia devoloped... just what factory it was made in.
Look and see if specific models have defects and shit like that, general review sites are win for that sort of stuff, jsut try to get impartial ones.
